Some Common Tree Pests

  • Asian Long horned Beetle
The Asian Long Horned Beetle is an invasive predator that can do some serious harm to the trees of Ohio. The average adult beetles are typically 1 to 1.5 inches in length. they have white spots, and they have long antennas. The female beetle will chew into the tree bark and there she will lay an egg the size of a grain of rice that will eventually hatch in span of 1 to 2 weeks. Eventually, when the eggs hatch, the baby larva bores will feed on the phloem (the vascular tissues in the plants). After 13 to 24 days as they reach adult hood, the beetles will chew exit holes out of the tree. They will then feed on the bark and leaves of the trees for 10 to 14 days before they begin mating and laying eggs, in which this will become a cycle leaving the trees as a feeding and breeding ground for the beetle's generations to come. The measure of action taken in a scenario like this is to have the infested tree removed. Trees that are infested by Asian Long Horned beetles can not be salvaged, chemicals and other treatments are not enough to eradicate the beetles.
  • Emerald Ash Borer
Emerald Ash Borers are a native species from Asia. They are a dark metallic green, 1/2 in inch, and 1/8 in width. Emerald Ash Borers typically only goes for Ash trees. When producing their eggs, their larva's tend to spend a good year developing beneath the surface of the tree bark. They will then feed on the living portions of the tree beneath the bark, which is extremely detrimental to the health of the tree; the feeding habits of these insect species directly attacks the trees since it disables the tree by restricting its ability to take in nutrients and water efficiently. Due to the insects way of life, there is no way an ash tree can survive. Signs and symptoms to look out for are wood pecker activity, bark peel back, and D shaped exit holes. A course of action we would take to salvage this scenario is to manipulate the soil of the tree by lacing it with insecticide. The tree will absorb the insecticide, then the insect will feed on it, which will eradicate the beetle.
  • Gypsy Moth
The Gypsy Moth is an invasive specie that moved from Pennsylvania and Michigan to Ohio over the course of time. In its larva form, the Gypsy Moth is a serious force to be reckoned with. Each egg mass that this insect produces can contain up to 500 to 1000 eggs--In a time span of 24 hours, 1 square foot of foliage can be consumed a by One 2 inch larvae. A conclusion that can be drawn from this is they are are invasive and critically potential dangerous insect to the species of trees. Some of their common food (tree) choices are Sweet gum, Chinkapin oak, Pussy willow, Black oak, American crab apple, Bigtooth aspen, Smooth sumac, American hophornbeam, River birch, Staghorn sumac, Bur oak, Eastern larch, Shumard oak, Cockspur hawthorn, White oak, Common witch-hazel, Scarlet oak, and Red oak.  To take action for these critters, we would spray the nest eggs and larvae with a horticultural oil spray formulated for gypsy moths.

Common Tree Diseases

  • Thousand Cankers Disease
Thousand Cankers Disease is a disease caused by the Walnut Twig Beetle. The Walnut Twig Beetle will bore a hole into the tree's branches and tissues causing a bacterial fungi to occur. As this happens over time, the tree will perish. The signs and symptoms to look out for are dead branches, small beetles, and cankers on the branches. The only solution to this disease at this moment in time is to remove the tree.
  • Anthracnose
Anthracnose is a serious and very common diseases that commonly affect trees like hickory, elm, ash, maple, dogwood, walnut, sycamore,  and oak. The term anthracnose is a name for a various different kinds of species of fungi: Apignomonia, discula, and Colletrichum. This type of disease is a serious infection that resides in the leaves and stem tissue. The signs and symptoms to look out for are leaves with brown and black botched areas, young branch and leaf die off. Anthracnose can be combated with chemical sprays in its early trimesters, however, once the issue gets to a more severe state, the fungicides will be ineffective.
